How to Choose the Right Tanning Bed for Your Home

The best tanning bed for your home is not the one with the best product page. It is the one that fits your room, your panel, your ceiling and how your household will actually use it. Here is how we walk homeowners through the choice, the same way we have helped salons choose equipment since 1990.

Lay-down or stand-up

Lay-down beds are the classic experience and the widest selection, but they want floor space. Stand-up booths take a fraction of the footprint, tan more evenly with no pressure points, and suit rooms with generous ceiling height. In finished lower levels, ceiling height often makes this decision for you.

Lamp count is horsepower

Residential beds run 16 to 36 lamps; commercial beds up to 48 and beyond. More lamps and higher wattage mean shorter sessions and deeper results. A 16 lamp entry bed will tan you eventually; a 32 lamp bed feels like the salon. Buy the most bed your space and power support, because underpowered beds are the most common upgrade regret.

Plug-in convenience or 220 volt performance

Beds that run on a standard outlet are simpler to place but limited in output. Beds on a dedicated 220 volt circuit perform like the salon. If you are already installing properly, the circuit is a one-time cost that unlocks the equipment actually worth owning.

New crate or inspected used

New residential beds ship from national websites as freight. Used commercial beds, inspected and serviced, often cost the same or less and are built to a completely different standard. We sell both, and we will tell you straight which one your situation calls for, because we are also the people who will service it either way.

Think about tomorrow

Hybrid beds add red light to UV in one unit, and dedicated red light beds are the fastest growing request we get for home wellness rooms. If the room is being wired anyway, plan the circuit for what the space might hold in five years, not just this purchase.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best tanning bed for home use?

The one matched to your space and power. For most homes: a 24 to 32 lamp lay-down on a dedicated 220 volt circuit if floor space allows, or a stand-up booth where ceiling height is generous and floor space is not. An inspected used commercial bed is frequently the best value.

How many lamps should a home tanning bed have?

Sixteen lamp entry beds work but tan slowly. A 24 lamp bed is a solid household middle ground, and 32 lamps delivers salon-level sessions. More lamps generally means a dedicated circuit, which is worth doing once and properly.

Do stand-up tanning booths work as well as beds?

Yes. Stand-ups typically run higher-output lamps, tan evenly without pressure points, and need far less floor space. They are often the right call for home gyms with 9 foot ceilings or better.
