Medium bio (120 words)

Stan Pope is the founder of Sun Systems and Service, a Metro Detroit company that has repaired, installed and serviced tanning beds for Michigan salons since 1990. He came to the work as a salon owner who could not find a technician who knew the equipment, learned the machines himself, and turned the calls from other owners into a company. Between 2008 and 2012 he was an author on five peer-reviewed papers on ultraviolet measurement, two as first author, with Dianne Godar of the FDA, Michael Holick of Boston University School of Medicine and William Grant. Today the company serves salons and private homes across Michigan, installs red light beds, and puts Stan on video for salons anywhere in the United States.

The research concerns UV measurement: converting meter readings into the dose a human body receives, and sunburn-weighted doses into vitamin D-weighted ones, applied to American children and adults. Stan speaks to equipment and measurement. He does not give medical advice and does not make health claims about tanning or red light.

Story angles

  • The Metro Detroit repairman who co-wrote UV research with the FDA and still answers his own phone.
  • Winter light in Michigan: what the measurement papers actually say, from a co-author who lives here.
  • Tanning salons in states with no technician left, and the video session that replaces the truck.
  • The physics of a lamp: why output fades long before the tube goes dark, and what it costs a salon.
  • Red light beds moving into Oakland County homes: the electrical nobody budgets for.
  • A one-man company that has outlasted most of the brands it services.
