Metro Detroit is where most of Michigan's tanning salons are, and it is where most of our work has always been. The salons follow the big roads. Why Metro Detroit beds fail the way they do

The building stock here is part of the diagnosis. Many of the strip plazas along Van Dyke, Gratiot, Telegraph and 8 Mile went up between the 1950s and the 1970s, and their panels were sized for a dry cleaner and a party store, not four tanning beds pulling full load on a Friday evening in March. Newer centers along M-59 and in Troy usually have the capacity, but beds still end up on shared circuits because that was cheaper on build-out day. So when a salon calls about a breaker that trips at peak hours or a ballast that lasted eighteen months, we check voltage and the circuit before we blame the bed.
