Tanning Bed Acrylics

Soft light glowing through a tanning bed canopy

The acrylic is the clear sheet between the client and the lamps. On a lay-down bed there are two: the bench acrylic you lie on and the canopy acrylic above you. They look like ordinary plastic. They are not. Tanning acrylics are a UV transmitting grade formed to the exact curve of a specific model, and the wrong sheet either blocks the UV the lamps make or sits wrong in the frame and cracks. Sun Systems & Service sources acrylics by request, matched to your bed's make, model and production year. Installed in Michigan, shipped nationwide after a video session.

Do not substitute window acrylic or polycarbonate. Standard sheet blocks most UV. The bed will light, the client will lie there, and nobody will tan. Only UV transmitting acrylic belongs in a tanning bed.

What fails and how you can tell

  • Cracks. Usually at the edges or at a stress point where the sheet meets the frame. A cracked bench acrylic flexes under a client and can fail. It is a stop-use item.
  • Haze. A cloudy or milky look that does not clean off. UV, heat and cleaning chemicals break down the surface over years. Hazed acrylic blocks a meaningful share of output, which is why new lamps behind an old acrylic disappoint.
  • Yellowing. Same cause, further along. A yellowed sheet is well past its useful life.
  • Crazing. A web of fine surface cracks, often from the wrong cleaner. Ammonia and alcohol based products do this. Use a cleaner made for tanning acrylics.
  • Sag or rattle. The sheet has lost its shape or the retaining strips have failed. Sometimes a strip is the fix, not the sheet.

How to identify the part

Acrylics are the most model-specific part on a bed. The same model name may have changed sheet dimensions, thickness or curve between production years, and a sheet a half inch off will not seat. We need the model plate with the serial number and, if possible, the production year. Then measure the existing sheet: length, width, thickness, and whether it is flat, curved or has a formed lip. A photo of the sheet in place and a photo of one edge out of the frame help. If the original sheet is gone, measure the frame opening and send photos of the retaining channel. The brand pages describe where the plate sits on common beds.

What drives the cost

Acrylic sheet is priced by size and thickness, and a formed canopy sheet with a curve costs more to make than a flat bench sheet. Shipping is the other factor: a sheet six feet long has to travel in a crate, and freight to a residential address costs more than to a salon with a dock. Discontinued models can still be done in many cases because the sheet is cut and formed to measurement rather than pulled from a shelf, but lead time is longer. We quote the sheet and the freight as one number so there are no surprises.

Installing acrylics

Bench sheets usually lift out after removing retaining strips. Canopy sheets are heavier and awkward to handle alone, and a dropped canopy sheet is an expensive mistake. In Michigan we install both, clean the lamps and reflectors while the bed is open, and check the canopy shocks since the lid is open anyway. National customers get the sheet crated and a video session for the install if they want a second set of eyes.

Request this part

Send the make, model and what the bed is doing. Stan confirms the part and quotes it, usually the same day.

A clear photo of the model plate and of the part itself saves a round of questions. Reply to the confirmation email with both.

Not sure which part it is

Call and describe the symptom. Stan has heard it before and will tell you what to look at first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use regular acrylic or plexiglass in a tanning bed?

No. Ordinary acrylic and polycarbonate block most ultraviolet light. Tanning beds use a UV transmitting grade of acrylic formed to the model. A hardware store sheet will fit the frame and stop the bed from tanning.

How do I clean tanning bed acrylic without damaging it?

Use a cleaner made for tanning acrylics and a soft cloth. Avoid ammonia, alcohol and abrasive pads, which cause crazing and haze. Clean after every session in a salon, and let the sheet cool before cleaning.

Can you get an acrylic for a discontinued tanning bed?

Often, yes. Acrylics are cut and formed to measurement, so a discontinued model is usually possible if we have the model plate, the serial number and good measurements of the old sheet or the frame. Lead time is longer than for a current model. If it cannot be done, we tell you before anything is ordered.
